Overview

AirForce is built on two layers and a flight path. The turbine is a synthesised engine in five types (turbofan, turbojet, turboprop, piston and rotor) with throttle, idle, spool-up and spool-down times, whine, scream, buzz-saw, roar, rumble, afterburner and turbulence, so a held note sounds like an engine coming up to power and a released one like it winding down. Under it is a sample layer of 155 recorded takes in eight families: jet engines, flybys, afterburners, propellers, helicopters, sonic booms, airport ambience and rockets, from US Government, NASA and public-domain recordings. Blend sets the balance, and the recordings lead in the natural presets. The Flyby moves the sound: Per Note flies one pass per key, Loop circles overhead lap after lap, and pass time can sync to the tempo. Doppler is applied at the source, so the pitch drop is real and never warbles, with speed up to Mach 0.95, distance, direction, air absorption and the ground-echo swoosh. A Squadron puts up to several aircraft on each note with spread, scatter and per-plane throttle. Three Warp modulators move throttle, pitch and distance, and the FX chain is the RatBells one: EQ, saturation, compressor, OTT, chorus, delay with a throw pad, shimmer reverb and a ducker. The Flight Line draws a runway at dusk with the aircraft flying across it, its sound rings and an N1 gauge. Twenty-four presets cover jets, flybys, props and rotors, sound design, bass and drones.
