GrowlHound

A dedicated growl bass instrument: one knob makes it talk, and the sub underneath never moves.

Overview

GrowlHound is a growl bass instrument for dubstep, brostep, riddim, tearout and neuro. Every growl people build by hand in a general synth and then resample comes down to five parts, and GrowlHound puts all five in one voice, each behind one big knob. The Throat is the dense source: a carrier that morphs from sine to triangle to saw to square, a phase-modulation operator with eight ratios and feedback, FM from noise and from the sub, and up to five unison voices, all oversampled. The Mouth is a five-formant bank built from published vowel tables (Bass and Tenor), morphed in frequency space along a four-vowel path, so Talk sweeps it through growl, yoi, ow, wah and more. Metal adds a key-tracked comb, Violence four anti-aliased distortion modes (Tube, Hard, Fold, Rectify), and Grit makes riddim aliasing on purpose, tracking the pitch. Movement drives Talk, FM, Metal, Violence and pitch from a tempo-locked LFO with seven shapes (including a Yoi shape) or a 16-step sequencer with glide and swing, retriggered per note or locked to the host. The Gun fires tearout pitch drops on every note, legato runs included. Underneath, a separate phase-reset sub sits below a crossover, mono and untouched by everything except the final clipper. The Style switch replays any preset as Sustain, Pluck, Combined or Mute, from keyswitches C-1 to D#-1. The FX chain runs Phaser, Width, OTT, EQ, a tempo delay and a room into a 4x oversampled clipper. The Kennel interface shows a neon hound whose jaw opens with the formants, a live vowel map, a formant scope, a sub scope and the Leash sequencer. Twenty-four presets run from Hound Growl and Talk Back to Yoi Yoi, Riddim Hound, Tearout, Neuro Hound and Reese Growl. Fully synthesised: no sample bank.
